The first time you sign on to the Internet via a Wi-Fi hot spot from outside your home or office, you'll suddenly feel just a bit freer.
Having tried the service this week at three Starbucks locations in New York, we found there is a lot to like. It is a real pleasure ordering a cappuccino and sitting down at a table to read through e-mail or check the news. The service works with PCs running Microsoft Windows or Apple Computer Macintosh operating systems. Turn on the laptop's Wi-Fi connection, open a Web browser and the hot spot detects you, presenting you with a Web page asking you to sign in. Type in your user name and password, and then you can use the Internet more or less normally with a fast connection. What could be better?
