WiMAX Wireless Internet offered in Portland

Wireless Internet service provider Clearwire Corp. quietly began offering web connections in the Portland area on Monday.

Clearwire uses a new technology called WiMAX to provide wireless Internet connections. WiMAX technology is mobile - meaning it can be accessed from anywhere within a coverage zone, or by stationary desktop computers. The company hopes to offer an alternative to DSL and cable Internet connections.

On its Web site, Clearwire offers connections at monthly rates ranging from $20 to $50, plus a $35 activation fee. Download speeds are comparable to DSL connections: 768 kilobits per second up to 6 megabits per second.
