Grand Haven, Mich., latest municipality with Wi-Fi
The city of Grand Haven, Mich., is the latest municipality to embrace Wi-Fi as a way to provide Internet access to residents, provide high-speed data services to city departments and try to lure new tech-savvy residents
Ottawa Wireless charges $19.99 a month for 256Kbit/sec. service to a fixed desktop and $24.99 a month for mobile service to a laptop at the same speed. Ottawa Wireless sells 512Kbit/sec. service for $44.99 a month and 1Mbit/sec. service for $84.99 a month.

Sprint and Novatel Wireless announced the Sprint PCS Connection Card by Novatel Wireless (Merlin C201) now comes packaged with Sprint PCS Connection Manager Software with Wi-Fi, providing seamless access to the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network and compatible Wi-Fi ZONES through one convenient client interface.
Sprint PCS Wi-Fi Access — Sprint's high-speed wireless Internet service — is currently available in thousands of locations, including airports, convention centers, hotels, major truck stops and other public venues. With the Sprint PCS Connection Manager Software, customers can travel across the country, detect Wi-Fi ZONES compatible with Sprint service and quickly connect to the Internet or their company networks with the use of a third-party Wi-Fi card or a laptop with embedded Wi-Fi technology.

StarBand offers new 481 Residential service.

New nomadic/mobile Two-Way Internet antenna system.

DirecWay marketing enhanded service.
DirecWay begins a big marketing push for an enhanced version of its broadband internet operation.
With recent technological upgrades -- and more enhancements planned by September -- Hughes Network Systems Inc. hopes to persuade big US companies and institutions that satellite can be a viable, though premium-priced, alternative to cable modems and telephone digital subscriber lines for telecommuting employees who need secure access to office networks.

New Internet Satellite Company launched Bird.
On July 17, WildBlue Communications of Greenwood Village, CO, launched a satellite from a site in French Guiana. It will use the satellite to offer broadband Internet access all over the U.S. beginning in about five months.
WildBlue expects to beat its predecessors, DirecWay and Starband, on both speed and price. Downloads at up to 1.5 Mbps, uploads at 256 Kbps, for a minimum $49.95 monthly fee.

Forbes Magazine Reviews T-Mobile Wi-Fi
The first time you sign on to the Internet via a Wi-Fi hot spot from outside your home or office, you'll suddenly feel just a bit freer.
Having tried the service this week at three Starbucks locations in New York, we found there is a lot to like. It is a real pleasure ordering a cappuccino and sitting down at a table to read through e-mail or check the news. The service works with PCs running Microsoft Windows or Apple Computer Macintosh operating systems. Turn on the laptop's Wi-Fi connection, open a Web browser and the hot spot detects you, presenting you with a Web page asking you to sign in. Type in your user name and password, and then you can use the Internet more or less normally with a fast connection. What could be better?

Wi-Fi providers begin to share access
Telephone giant SBC said it and Sprint agreed to share their wireless Internet networks, called Wi-Fi hot spots. Sprint customers will be able to use SBC's 1,800 hot spots nationwide. SBC customers will have access to Sprint's 12 hot spots, which are in high-traffic airports, convention centers and hotels, SBC says.

T-Mobile USA to Sell HP Handheld Phone with Wi-Fi
T-Mobile USA and Hewlett-Packard Co. next month will introduce the first-ever handheld computer that also works as a cell phone and can tap into the Internet using high-speed wireless hotspots, the companies said on Monday.

"Having access to downtown Wi-Fi in the park will make it a place people will be able to enjoy in different ways," said Deputy City Manager Mitchell Johnson.

Provider to add Wi-Fi to cellular service plans
Rogers Wireless Inc., plans to bundle Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) hotspot access with its personal communications service (PCS) rate plans.
The Toronto-based carrier has not announced pricing plan for the bundles, nor has it set a launch date, but it's unlikely it will be available before 2005.
