The six-ounce WiFlyer base station ships with the dial-up numbers of America Online, Microsoft's MSN and EarthLink pre-configured. You'll need a Wi-Fi adapter in the computer that you use to access it, but most laptops have built-in wireless.

BOINGO Bolsters Hotspot Security

BOINGO said it has released new end user client software that incorporates support for 802.1x and WPA security measures. The support is in conjunction with Windows XP Service Pack 2, which simplifies use of those measures.

Rival hotspot vendor T-Mobile has said it would implement similar hotspot security measures after the release of Windows XP SP2, but has yet to announce the upgrade. Full Story...

Culver City, CA Launches Free Wi-Fi

Culver City, California announced the launch of free wireless Internet access in all outdoor areas of Downtown Culver City effective Thursday, September 9. This service is the first municipal broadband wireless Wi-Fi "hotspot" on Los Angeles' Westside.

Downtown's "hotspot" will cover an area of approximately one square mile from Trader Joe's at Culver & Ince to the edge of the Sony Pictures campus at Washington & Hughes five blocks west. The district includes Town Plaza, an outdoor performance and gathering spot, a public park, the Culver Hotel, numerous outdoor cafes and retailers, and a number of offices including Culver Studios and Westwood One. FreedomLink Wi-Fi service will be in 10 state parks in Michigan as part of the state’s MiWiFi project designed to provide wireless Internet access for Michigan residents and travelers at docks, rest areas and welcome centers around the state.
