AOL to give away anti-virus software to members
America Online plans to offer its 23.4 million US subscribers a premium anti-virus software service, McAfee VirusScan Online. The software will be available when subscribers download a new version of AOL's client software, AOL 9.0 Security Edition, in November.
AOl had previously charged about 2 milliion of its dial-up and high speed Internet subscribers an additional $2.95 a month to be able to scan incoming email, downloads and a user's desktop PC files.
"We don't think virus protection is something nice to have. It's a must-have," said Danny Kricher, executive vice president of AOL.

RVers find Wi-Fi at more Truck Stops
RVers are more likely to find a Wi-Fi signal at truck stops these days.
"This all happened very quickly," says Brian McCaul, vice president of marketing for TON Services, a division of Flying J. "A year ago, there were only a handful of deployments, but today the trucking industry is adopting Wi-Fi at a rapid clip," McCaul says. "I'd estimate that nearly 75 percent of all major truck stops have deployed hotspots."
"In the case of Wi-Fi, we invested ahead of where we thought the market was in terms of actual users, but the adoption rate in the industry surprised us. Truck drivers, RVers, and business travelers all seemed to be just waiting for this type of service," McCaul said.
To date, Flying J has rolled out about 270 hotspots.

Libraries Test Free Wi-Fi, But you might need a Library Card
Public and university libraries around the country increasingly offer free Wi-Fi as a way to serve or bring in patrons--but patrons only, please. This should be of inerterst to RVers who use libraries for internet access while traveling.
According to journalist Glenn Fleishman availability of "free Wi-Fi" in public and university libraries should be called "patron Wi-Fi." In the majority of libraries he checked around the U.S., using Wi-Fi required a library card (municipal/public) or a student ID (university/academic). In some cases, a Wi-Fi card had to be registered; this is mostly the case at universities.
