Goodbye DirecWay, Hello HughesNet

The HughesNet brand will replace the DirecWay name (which disappears completely April 22), covering all the company’s broadband solutions and services provided via satellite and terrestrial networks that exist now or will roll out during the coming year. Such services include the Hughes block of managed network services, digital media, several flavors of broadband and high-speed ISP access for businesses and consumers. Man fined $250 for Wi-Fi Internet piracy

Just as pirating your neighbor’s cable service to watch premium movie channels is against the law, so too is surfing the Web using someone else’s wireless Internet access.

David M. Kauchak, 32, a former Machesney Park resident, is the first person in Winnebago County to be charged with remotely accessing another computer system without the owner’s approval. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to the charge and was fined $250 and sentenced to one year of court supervision.

“We just want to get the word out that it is a crime. We are prosecuting it, and people need to take precautions,” Assistant State’s Attorney Tom Wartowski said. Full Story...

 

Iowa Cities get Free Wi-Fi

More than 50 people gathered Tuesday at S.T. Morrison Park for a luncheon, ceremonial "wire" cutting and the announcement of the free outdoor wireless zones. Corridor Free Wireless Network, or cFree, will cover the pedestrian mall and its surroundings in downtown Iowa City, downtown Cedar Rapids and S.T. Morrison and North Ridge parks in Coralville. Residents of Rio Rancho, N.M. to get free Wi-Fi

Residents of Rio Rancho, N.M., will be able to access the citywide Wi-Fi network for free after the city council this week voted to change the terms of its agreement with service provider Azulstar.

Under the new agreement, Rio Rancho citizens will be able to access the Internet via the Azulstar Wi-Fi network at no cost after viewing a short video commercial upon logging onto the system, Azulstar CEO Tyler van Houwelingen said.

Rio Rancho residents using the Wi-Fi network for free will access the Internet at speeds of 100 kb/s. Paid individual users on the network will realize data rates in excess of 1 MB/s, while enterprise customers-including the city of Rio Rancho-will pay for data rates of 3 MB/s. Full Story...

Austin, TX McDonald's get Wi-Fi

Wayport, Inc. and McDonald's today gave the greater Austin area residents and visitors another reason to connect with the Golden Arches. Beginning March 13, participating area McDonald's restaurants will add a new item to their menu -- high-speed Wi-Fi wireless Internet access for wireless-enabled notebook computers, handheld devices and Nintendo DS gaming devices. The Wi-Fi service will be available in more than 40 McDonald's locations throughout the Austin metro area.

The cost of Wayport's high-speed Internet service is $2.95 for a day pass that can be used at any of the greater Austin area McDonald's within the same day. St. Cloud, FL, kicks off first free citywide Wi-Fi

After two years of planning and work, St. Cloud Florida officials say their free wireless-fidelity Internet service will operate citywide today.

St. Cloud officials are bragging that theirs will be the first municipality in the nation to offer free wireless Internet service citywide. It will be accessible to anyone in the city whose computer has a wireless modem.

Sioux City, IA, Wi-Fi 'hotspots'

Sioux City was ranked the eighth most 'wireless' city in Iowa, according to a recent survey released by MetroFreeFi.com, the world's largest directory of free wireless Internet hotspots.
