Canadian RV dealer picks Riverside, California for first U.S. shop

Undeterred by a recession that has battered the RV industry and its presence in the Inland region, a multimillion-dollar Canadian RV dealer will open its first U.S. dealership in Riverside to be closer to a travel trailer manufacturer that the owner considers his "hidden secret."

The dealership, American All-Star RV at 7207 Indiana Ave. off Highway 91 near Madison Street, is vacant now but could be filled with Riverside-based Pacific Coachworks' line of Tango travel trailers as early as Monday, said Bruce Urban, owner and president of Western RV Country Group of Companies in Alberta.

Pacific Coachworks trailers, built at a factory at 549 Rivera St. in Riverside, have been one of Urban's biggest sellers in Canada, he said, citing the company's attention to detail and use of plywood inside the trailers instead of particle board.

Why I choose 3G over Wi-Fi

CNET News - Marguerite Reardon
Say what you will about the wireless phone companies, but in a crunch their managed 3G cellular networks get the job done when Wi-Fi connections fail.

I was in Chicago at a telecom trade show this week and had to cover a Federal Communications Commission's meeting via Webcast. Ironically, the meeting was focused on the FCC's proposal to draft new regulations to keep the Internet "open" and "free."

The video for the Webcast, which I was watching over an unprotected Wi-Fi connection, started out fine. But after only a few minutes, the picture began to break up, the buffering wheel on the media player churned wildly, and the audio stopped and started so often that I only could make sense of two or three words at a time. Sometimes the audio would start up where it had left off, but then quickly jump ahead to the live stream, cutting out entire sentences and paragraphs.

When I couldn't take it any longer, I shut down my computer, rebooted, and plugged in my Sprint 3G air card.

Conneting to Wi-Fi Is About to Get a Lot Easier

Going Wi-Fi is about to get a lot easier. For many consumers, setting up an in-home Wi-Fi connection point is something of a hassle.

But that's set to change come mid-2010, when a tech upgrade will make it easier for users of consumer electronics to exchange files between electronic gadgets.

The Wi-Fi Alliance, a tech industry consortium, said its members will release technology that effectively turns gadgets into mini access points, able to create wireless connections with other Wi-Fi-enabled gadgets or broadband modems within a radius of about 300 feet. The alliance includes Intel, Cisco Systems, Apple, and more than 300 other makers of the equipment that runs Wi-Fi networks, often used to provide wireless Web connections in homes, cafés, hotels, and airports.

Novatel Readies Next-Gen Cellular MiFi Hot Spot

The next-generation MiFi, the Linux-based 2372, will operate in North American GSM/HSPA networks and, like the current model, will feature GPS and a rechargeable battery. It features quadband EDGE operation and triband HSPA operation in the U.S. 850/1,900MHz bands and overseas 2.1GHz band.

A 2372 launch announcement by a Canadian carrier is imminent, and Novatel expects to offer the 2372 through a U.S. GSM carrier at an unspecified later date. Hadley expects a Linux-based EV-DO Rev. A version of the 2372 to be available in the U.S. late in the first half of 2010.
