Use Your Cell Phone as a Wireless Modem

Phone Web browsers and apps can handle many of your on-the-go Internet needs, but sometimes you have to use a laptop. What do you do if no Wi-Fi hotspot is in range? That's when tethering--sharing your smartphone's 3G Internet connection with your laptop via USB or Bluetooth--can be a lifeline to the Internet. However, not all wireless carriers officially support it, and, depending on your mobile plan, you could get slapped with some exorbitant data charges.

McDonald's to Offer Free WiFi Internet

McDonald's Corp. will soon start offering free wireless Internet access at its U.S. restaurants as part of the fast-food chain's transformation from its hamburger roots into a hang-out destination.

Starting in mid-January, McDonald's will lift a $2.95 fee that it had charged customers for two hours of wireless Internet access, available at about 11,000 of its 14,000 domestic locations, McDonald's USA Chief Information Officer David Grooms said in an interview.

McDonald's hopes the free Internet could encourage customers to hang around during down times between meals, providing a captive audience that may buy some of the chain's McCafe line of coffee drinks. The chain also plans to begin selling items like frappes and smoothies by mid-2010 that aim to appeal to customers during the snacking hours that could get a lift from greater traffic.

Free WiFi for Verizon Mobile Broadband Customers

With more and more people and businesses wanting and needing to stay connected, and more and more laptops being sold every day, Verizon Wireless today gave its customers another choice to do just that. Verizon Wireless introduced Verizon Wi-Fi, a way for Mobile Broadband customers to access thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots at no additional charge and to move easily from the nation's most reliable 3G wireless network to those hotspots.

Verizon Wi-Fi is available in locations across the United States, including airports, bookstores, coffee shops, hotels and other public locations. The service is also available at locations in Canada and Mexico, so customers can reduce data roaming charges in those countries when connected to a Verizon Wi-Fi hotspot. Customers can search for local hotspots - either by address or type of location such as a hotel or cafe - at www.verizonwireless.com/wi-fi. Search results will provide the location's address, a map and driving directions.

When within range of a Verizon Wi-Fi hotspot, customers can use VZAccess Manager to connect with a Wi-Fi-enabled notebook or netbook computer. When they are ready to move, but want to remain connected, or if they want the added security of the Verizon Wireless network, customers can simply switch back to Verizon Wireless' 3G wireless network, which is the largest and most reliable in the country. These choices can help them manage their monthly data allowance by potentially preventing overage charges and saving the allowance for when mobility is needed.

Verizon Wi-Fi allows customers to access the Internet, making it easy to browse the Web, stay on top of social networks, or complete business tasks whenever they need to be done. To take advantage of Verizon Wi-Fi, customers must have a monthly Mobile Broadband or GlobalAccess plan. They must also have a Verizon Wi-Fi supported device, including a Mobile Broadband USB modem, PC Card, ExpressCard®, Verizon Wireless MiFi(TM) 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, or a notebook or netbook with Mobile Broadband Built-In running Windows® 7, 2000, XP or Vista. A full list of Verizon Wi-Fi supported devices can be found at www.vzam.net.

To use Verizon Wi-Fi, customers must also have VZAccess Manager version 7.2 or higher installed on their PCs. To upgrade to VZAccess Manager 7.2, visit www.vzam.net or select "Check for Upgrades" from the Help menu of VZAccess Manager.

For more information on Verizon Wi-Fi or to search for Verizon Wi-Fi hotspots, visit www.verizonwireless.com/wi-fi.

How safe is that Wi-Fi hotspot?

Anyone with a laptop knows how convenient wireless internet access can be. Many businesses offer Wi-Fi hotspots and people are happy to use them.

"It's so easy. I sit in this coffee shop hours and hours and hours a day. It's kind of like my office," explained Wi-Fi user Phillip Carter recently in Raleigh.

But, experts say there are dangers to web surfing in Wi-Fi hotspots because wireless technology has become fertile ground for hackers and thieves.

Google Pairs 200 GB Cloud Storage with Eye-Fi Wi-Fi Photo Card

Photo buffs using Picasa get an early holiday gift — a free 4 GB Eye-Fi Home Video wireless SD card with the purchase of cloud storage space. Google is offering the deal to folks purchasing 200 GB of online storage at a cost of $50. Along with the storage is the Eye-Fi card and one year of geotagged transfers from it — the card is valued at $69.99 while the service is worth another $24.98, so at $50 for the storage and Eye-Fi kit, it’s a solid deal.

A few caveats appear on the offer page: U.S. and Canada only and you’ll have to be a first-time buyer of Google’s storage product.

Windows 7 Notebooks can share WiFi

Microsoft may have buried a wireless networking feature in Windows 7 Starter, the edition installed on most netbooks, but it did not actually disable the ad hoc wireless feature, as the firm's marketing materials claim, a noted Windows blogger said.

Ad hoc wireless networking, which lets several Windows computers share a single connection, was one of several networking features Microsoft claims are not available in Windows 7 Starter. Those features, which include ad hoc networking, Internet connection sharing and network bridging, are present in the more expensive, tools-laden editions, such as Home Premium and Professional.

But according to Rafael Rivera, ad hoc networking is present in Starter, albeit hidden.

Google launches free Public DNS

Google has opened up public access to a new Domain Name System (DNS) service that allows users to look up Internet hosts quickly, accurately and securely.

The new service enables users to bypass their own Internet Service Provider's DNS to use Google's performance-optimized name lookup servers. Internet users constantly access DNS in the background every time they enter a URL in their browser, click a hyperlink, send email, or perform any other task that requires resolving the IP address of a given host name.

A user's currently assigned DNS server may be overburdened, slow, or even maliciously poisoned to provide bad information. That makes Google's new service both potential performance and security improvement.

RV Park WiFi provider TengoInternet To Acquire NomadISP

Austin, TX and Boise, ID -- TengoInternet, Inc., the oldest and largest Wi-Fi services provider for the outdoor hospitality industry, today announced it has acquired the Nomad ISP outdoor hospitality WiFi network assets of LinOra, Inc. Simultaneously, TengoInternet will enter into a strategic alliance to resell LinOra’s BlueMesh rugged WiFi hardware product lines.

For TengoInternet, the acquisition adds NomadISP’s customer portfolio and BlueMesh’s technology capabilities to TengoInternet’s leading WiFi network services and customer base. The combination will deliver enhanced network assurance services, guest amenities and content to the outdoor hospitality industry.

Under terms of the agreement, TengoInternet, Inc. will acquire and serve NomadISP’s over 300 campground customers, expanding TengoInternet’s network to nearly 1,000 campgrounds in 48 states, Canada and Mexico. TengoInternet will serve hundreds of thousands additional guests, and further its goal of building an industry-wide WiFi network.

“This agreement allows both companies to focus on our strengths and do what we love,” said Eric Stumberg, founder and CEO of TengoInternet. “LinOra is the leader in rugged wireless technology systems, and we are the leader in providing wireless networks to customers in the outdoor hospitality market. The NomadISP network and LinOra’s BlueMesh product platform will advance our customer service, network technology and industry goals.”

“In order to better channel our resources and focus on attracting and servicing new implementers of BlueMesh solutions in other industries, it made sense to find a worthy company who could properly inherit and serve the NomadISP WiFi Customer base,” said Kelly Hogan, founder and CEO of LinOra and their NomadISP business. “TengoInternet was the obvious choice.”

The two companies' lines of business are highly complementary with little operational overlap. TengoInternet has developed a joint-task team of TengoInternet and NomadISP employees who will successfully transition customers to TengoInternet over the next six months with no interruption of service.
