Using cellular data modems for internet access while RVing is commonplace these days. But with many RVer couples having his and hers computers now, some are turning to devices like the Verizon MiFi 2200, a pocket-sized 3G modem that creates a Wi-Fi hot spot allowing multiple computers internet access at the same time.

You can accomplish much of the same thing with the CradlePoint PHS300, currently on sale at Buy.com for $99.99 shipped.

Using your supplied USB wireless modem… not the PC Card variety… the PHS300 makes a secure Wi-Fi hot spot for up to 16 users… the MiFi limits you to five.

It’s perfect for users who already have a wireless modem and don’t want to change providers and/or sign a two years a two-year contract to get a Wi-Fi device.

If you are only on the road a few days or weeks at a time, you can use the PHS300 with a pay-as-you-go wireless modem that requires no contracts and has no monthly minimums.

You can also tether the PHS300 to certain cell phones as well–see the complete list of supported devices on CradlePoint’s product page.

One disadvantage of the PHS300 is it is not near as compact as the MiFi. You’re not likely to carry it in your pocket, and your USB modem sticks out awkwardly from the end. Still, it’s a small unit and you’ll easily find a place for it in the RV.

The PHS300 lists for $179.99 so it’s a bargain at $99.99. The unit has an average of 4.5 stars from Amazon customers.
